UC and PENTASA

UC and PENTASA

I have been diagnosed with UC two years ago and atarted taking 6 grams of Sulfazalasine per day. Even thouh there were some side effects, the treatment was succesful so we started eliminating step by step the doses I had after 8 months. It didn't last long until I started with diarrea (diarrhea) and loosing weight again, at that time I was very stressed at my job. My doctor prescribed PENTASA, 1.5 GRAMS per day and again soon the treatment was succesful again. this time I continued with the treatment for almost 8 months even though I was in my weight again. After that we decided with my doctor to start lowering the dosage. Everything was ok until about 1 month ago, when I passed through another period of stress (too much work!!), so here I am, loosing weight again. Next Thursday 17th I have an appointment with my doctor and I know I'll have to start all over again.
My question is: I have never bleeded, some times I have constipation for two days and then diarrea (diarrhea). If I refuse to take PENTASA any more will my condition will deteriorate or remain as it is? What do you think about Alternative Medicine?
Thanks in advance for your time in reading this letter.
  Jose Luis
Dear Jose Luis,
Recent reports have confirmed that patients with inflammatory bowel disease who remain on maintenance therapy have less frequent flare-ups than patients who stop their medications. I would recommend that you remain on the lowest dose of medication possible that keeps you in remission. In terms of alternative medicine, as long as the therapy you are considering has no side effects and has some proven rationale I would not discourage you. However, keep in mind that many of these therapies have not been scientifically tested and may have adverse effects. I hope you find this information helpful.
