UC and stress

My farther suffers terribly with regular flare ups of his Ulcerative Colitis.  He has read somewhere about the emerging link between UC and stress, and was wondering what the current view is on the link.  Also he was hoping it might enable him to keep hs flare ups to a mimimum.
  Thanks in advance.

Dear Helen,
There is no strongly compelling evidence that emotional stress exacerbates the ulcerative colitis although once the symptoms flare, patients do feel very stressed.  In general terms, learning relaxation techniques is very valuable in coping with a chronic unpredictable disease.  Whether these techniques will prevent recurrences is a subject for debate.
