Ultrasound result vs. blood test result

Ultrasound result vs. blood test result

Hi,

My mom just recently went in for an ultrasound after experiencing abdominal pain and flu-like symtpom.  The ultrasound results came back which described "neoplasms of multiple foci" on both the left and the right lobe of the liver.  There are total of 6 indicated on the ultrasound report with the sizes ranging from 2.5 cm to 10 cm, possibly indicating metastasis).    Our doctor has then an additional blood test.  The AFP level was normal (<2.0 ng/ml) and so as all the liver function panel except for slightly elevated alkaline phosphatase and high WBC cell. Do you think she has liver cancer?  What kind of additional tests should we be looking at to ascertain what she has?

Thank you!

AFP only has a sensitivity between 40 and 60 percent for hepatocellular carcinoma.  If the imaging shows masses or lesions, this deserves further workup despite a normal AFP.

Further imaging is necessary, including a CT scan or PET scan to further determine the primary focus of the cancer and for preparation of possible biopsy.

These options should be discussed with your personal physician, or in conjunction with an oncologist.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
