Vagus Nerve

Hi, My symptoms are sweating for no reason, chest pain along the vagus nerve area, diarrhea every day.  I have had a barium enema test and small bowel series.  I had a stress test for my heart.  All tests were normal.  I am at my wit's end.  Today I was talking to a customer and I was sweating profusely.  It was only 60 degrees and I was sweating!  One of my doctors prescribed Robinul for the sweating.  It helped the sweats but did not cure the cause.  Another of my doctors prescribed Prozac.  This also helped for a time but then I started having the diarrhea.  Last year when the weather became cooler, the sweating stopped.  Not this year.  Please advise which direction medically I should take.  A gastroenterologist or neurologist (or someone else).  Thank you for your time.

Dear Carroll,
It is difficult to know what to suggest.  I think that evaluation by an endocrinologist might be the best place to start, although your primary physician might be able to do much of this workup looking for adrenal and thyroid causes for your symptoms.  A neurologist could also be helpful.  Based on what you have written, a gastroenterologist is not the best physician to see, unless the diarrhea is the predominant symptom.
This information is presented for educatioanl purposes only.  Always consult your personal physician for specific medical questions.
