What does colour mean?

What does colour mean?

I am worried about the colour of my bowel movements. For the past
week or so the color has been a dark green and then today I had
great pain in my stomach and it was followed by a bright green
stool. I am a vegetarian however I don't feel that my diet is
that healthy however I don't feel that I have eaten anything
which would warrant this. I am a bit worried but don't know what
  it means if anything.
  Thank you,
  Juliette S.
Dear Juliette S.,
Stool color is generally influenced by the diet. Bacteria in the colon and bile pigments also play a role in determining stool color. Yellowish brown, green, tan and orange colored stool have all been described and are considered normal. Black, tarry stools or red, burgundy colored stools are indicative of recent gastrointestinal bleeding. Clay colored stools indicate a blockage of the bile ducts. If your stools are formed then I wouldn't worry about the green stools. If your abdominal pain persists you may need to see your primary care physician for further evaluation and testing. Good luck to you. I hope you find this information helpful.
