What does the C-Reactive Protein Level Measure?

I recently had a C-Reactive Protein Level test done by my G.I. doctor.  My CRP level is 26.70 and the normal range is between 0-7.9.  I have done some research online and found that the CRP level is an indicator of a heart attack, but does anyone know what it could mean as far as the G.I. system?  I am assuming that it must have some bearing or why would my G.I. doctor run the test?  Any ideas?

I also had a C-reactive protein test done by a GP.  I wondered why he did this.  Mine was normal but later I read that there are 2 kinds of C-reative tests done, one is for the heart and the other? and this has to be clarified by the doctor to the lab of which one he wants.  Very confusing.  Maybe someone here can help clear this up.
