What is going on here?

What is going on here?

I have been having stomach pain a little left of the sternum,
just below my ribs. The doctor said it was GERD at first, and
gave me carafate and Zantac. (I had an adverse reaction to Prilosec) /
However, I had an upper GI done that revealed no GERD or ulcers.
This discomfort has been going on for over 2 months now with little
improvement. Although I am only 20, is it possible that the pain
I have is due to a gall bladder problem that has radiated its pain
near my stomach, or is it another stomach problem that needs to
be addressed? The key to this here is that it all started about
10 hours after I had taken 2 Motrins (as told by the health
service here at school)with food in my stomach to reduce the
swelling from a sports injury. Therefore, is it thenjust a stomach
irritation that needs to be remedied by eating Jello for a week?
Also, after the upper GI, my stomach felt a lot worse that night.
Again, what is going on here?
  Thanks,
  Dan

Dear Dan D,
An upper GI x-ray may not be sufficiently sensitive to diagnose the superficial mucosa inflammation of esophagitis or gastritis.  In order to completely exclude mucosal inflammation as the cause of your symptoms you will require an endoscopy (a look into your esophagus and stomach with a telescope).  It is quite likely that much of your discomfort is related to gastric irritation from the Motrin.  Studies suggest that as many as 40% of people taking anti0inflammatory agents such as Motrin will develop inflammation of the lining of the stomach.
Your symptoms are not suggestive of gallstones or biliary colic. At present, I would not suggest that you have tests of your gall bladder.
This response is offered for your general information and should not replace the conclusions drawn from a careful and complete evaluation by your physician.
