What should I expect?

What should I expect?

My mother had leukemia and has been in remission for 4 yrs now.She had a bone marrow transplant and ofcourse radiation and chemo-therapy.We were aware of the risks on other organs from the treatments and now we believe she is having liver problems.A few days ago we took her to the er,they pumped her stomach which was full of blood. They patched up some varices she had in her esophagus.Did an ultrasound of her liver and they said it came out negative(whatever that meant). She's home now complaining of back pain and nausousness. The doctor did more blood tests and we haven't heard the results but I don't even know what to expect.Thank you for your help!

I'm not a doctor, but here's what I'd check on if I were you:

1. From the Ultrasound---

Ask if her liver was enlarged, normal size, or shrunken.
(Enlarged means something is actively bothering it)
   (Shrunken means advanced cirrhosis)

Ask if her spleen is enlarged.
(An enlarged spleen means she has portal hypertension---which would explain the varices---but it also means that the doctor may want to give her a prescription for a beta blocker (to reduce chances of her bleeding again)

2. From the blood tests---

Look for anything that's not in the normal "reference range".
Which results are too high....which results are too low.

Pay special attention to:
ALBUMIN
BILIRUBIN
PLATELETS
PT or INR
