Who is doing research in Gastro-esophageal motility disorders?

I would like to find out who (&where) is researching esophageal motility disorders.  Having accessed Medline, I cannot distinguish amongst the many articles in my search results.  Since the etiology of these disorders is yet to be determined, I would like to read about the different approachs to this spectrum of illness.  Thanks.

Dear Ardyce,
There are many articles written about esophageal function.  Esophageal motility (dysmotility) is a contributing factor to reflux and consequently numerous articles that describe reflux are pulled up when the search term is esophageal dysmotility.  There are several physicians that you could consider seeing depending on the region of the country in which you live.  In Philadelphia there is Dr. castell and Dr.  Phil Katz.  In the midwest Dr. Joel Richter could be considered.  In MN Dr. camilleri of the mayo clinic would be a good choice.

Stay away from John Hopkins Univ. in Baltimore MD.  I went thought their digestive disease and gestroenrology clinic and they did a surgery that has left me with such severe pain that at times I can't function.  They did not follow up with me even after several phones calls telling them that I was in pain.  I ened up in the emerency room at St. Joseph's Hospital in Baltimore to try and correct the mistake that Hopkins caused.  Now I find out what they did is irreversible.  I'm an left with the pain to deal with and they have washed there hands of any commitment to help.

For several months I have had a pain near the top of my stomach, especially after eating and upon arising in the morning. I also have a case of halitosis that I never had before. Is this diet related? I do have a gluten intolerance. I have been cleared of an ulcer or any problem with the pancreas.

Taking 20mg Prilosec worked the first time I took it, in April, but a recent month-long prescription did not see to work.

Would appreciate any comments.

I would like to know anything you have found out. I have been diagnosed with esophageal dysmotility for two years, and am having increasingly uncomfortable symptoms. My physician has told me there is no cure, and that she is just surprised it is happening to someone my age (40's). The Merck Manual suggests it is progressive and generally ends in death through pneumonia.

I have a motility disorder. Since 1994 I can only eat about
4 ounces at a time. any more than that i will vomit undigested
food. my doctor is tired of dealing with it.  he said nothing is
wrong with vomiting undigested food cause cows do it all the
time he said. I tried mayo clinic but I can't even make an
appointment cause they need a doctor to refer me there first.
I have not seen my doctor in 4 years and i called him the other
day and didn't even want to see me. He ordered me propulsid.
Since i have been taken that I keep my food down. anything
more than 4 oz. i will still vomit. the vomiting is much
better since I'm
on propulsid. I seen someone said dr. joel Richter is a
good doctor from the midwest does anyone know how a person
could get ahold of him. I need to see someone who
is real good when it comes to motility problems. I have
insurance i just want to get this problem taken care of.
please someone help me. I will travel to get help. I want
to some day live a normal live. I need a doctor who can help
me and who can take the stress of a possible hard case to
get a handle of. ANYONE WITH ANY INFORMATION PLEASE HELP ME.
Thankyou for your time.

Karen,
Where in the midwest are you? Kansas University Medical center has been doing research on gastric motility for years and has many good gastroenterologists. I think they have a web site that you can make an appointment from. I just did a search on Yahoo with Kansas university Medical center to get them. Hang in there, Propulsid is a good med. You can e-mail me at ***@****

about five years ago, i started having swallowing problems with solids and liquids. doctor told me it was esophageal spasms. she put me on reglan then. it went away.  between then and now, it has happened without eating. i will get very severe pain in my chest and can't even swallow my own spit without it hurting. have been prilosec once or twice.  am on propulsid every night, zantac 600mg a day, and the doctor just gave me levsin to try for the spasms.  these spasms are tremendously painful. does anyone have information about this?  what has helped?  is there a pain med that can help???  doctor also told me i have probably a hiatal hernia. do have lots of reflux. thanks.

My teenage son has a gastric dysmotility disorder, among a ton of other things!! He always feels full, way too much fat, calories, protein, vitamins, minerals, calcium, etc., are passing straight through him and right into the stool. He has been diagnosed with autonomic dysfunction, either as a result of the Epstein-Barr infection he had in August of 1998, which would have caused his autoimmune system to launch an attack on his autonomic nervous system, or he has a "silent" pheochromocytoma which is too small and quiet right now to be detected. We now basically have to wait and see what will happen next. He has gone from 210 lbs. at the end of August, 1999 to 165 lbs. currently. However, he does have NUMEROUS other problems, such as cardiac damage from hypertension which was VERY high and unresponsive to medication, then became very low, and now, off medication, is normal; dilated and unequal pupils, orange palms and soles of feet, horrible coloring, and on and on.

We have now spent 4 weeks at Mayo Clinic. Fortunately, I was able to call and arrange the appointment myself. Plenty of senior citizens go there each year for their physicals, also. I can't imagine why they wouldn't let someone schedule an appointment without a physician referral, unless it's for insurance reasons.

An interesting website regarding autonomic dysfunction, which causes gastroparesis and motility disorders, is the National Dysautonomia Research Foundation located at ndrf.org. Another primary case of autonomic dysfunction is the tumor called a pheochromocytoma.

I hope this helps.

Dear Karen,

Dr. Ray Clouse of the Gastroenterology Department at Barnes Medical Center in St. Louis has been conducting extremely interesting research on esophageal motility.

He also works closely with the general surgery department at Barnes, performing both pre and post operative motility analysis.

His research has been unique and very powerful (a European company developed a customized motility analysis system specifically for Dr. Clouse).

Many motility researchers consider Dr. Clouse the world's leading expert on esophageal motility disorders. And his primary interest is...his patients.

I am doing PG research in Nuclear Medicine at regional Radiation medicine Centre at calcutta, India.
My area of interest is to assess the post_radiotherapy effect on esophageal motility at ths LOS by radiocolloid scintigraphy.
Transit time assessment of semisolid food in esophagus will be the key in our study to give the required data.
i like to have the results of previous such studies.
Thanks and Regards.
