Worried sick?

Worried sick?

I am a 43 yr old male, generally in good health but have been regular (probably inxs) drinker for 20 yrs. I recently quit (and have absolutely no desire to restart) and haven't had any withdrawal or other symptoms but now am worried I have damaged my esophagus. I went to my Primary Care Dr for a complete work-up due to chest discomfort which went around deep into my left shoulder blade and after a complete workup (liver, LFTs, discomfort at breastbone, check of abdomin (abdomen), etc..) he said I have no outward signs of any damage or concern, labs were all good, and prescibed Aciflex for the pain saying it was probably stomach upset and reflux going on with the new diet and abstinance. Everything I read on line says I am ripe for esophagus cancer (and every other kind for that matter)and it has me scared to death...sort of defeats the purpose of quitting...wife thinks it is psychosomatic.....I have a gastro Dr appt this week and am just looking for any other ideas causing this...

If there is concern about the esophagus, an upper endoscopy would be obtained.  This can evaluate for inflammation, Barrett's esophagus, or possible masses or cancer.  Alcohol can increase the risk of inflammation in the esophagus.

If negative, further testing can be considered with an abdominal CT scan or ultrasound.

I would also evaluate the heart - with a possible stress echocardiogram to look for coronary disease.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

You don't really talk about your symptoms in enough detail to get a clear picture but here are a few questions:
1.  Anxiety can bring exacerbate symptoms - I have had this happen
2.  Could you be having symptoms of a panic attack or perhaps a heart related issue?  Sometimes heart issues can cause pain in other areas
3.  Do your symptoms come on after you have eaten certain types of foods?

one more thing - I also get this problem when I chew certain types of gum - it is the sugar substitute they use in the gum.  Really pay attention to what you are eating and look for your symptoms - they can happen immediately or take a little bit to present themselves

Had an EKG..normal...have a feeling of heartburn/indegestion when I sleep...when I eat, there is mild discomfort while the food is traveling down the esophagus (or at least it feels that way)...
