bowel & stomach problem

Hell-o, once to three times a year for the last 8 years or so I will have a few days with very bad cramps & gas with
either the runs or constipation.  It is sometimes followed by a mucus discharge and usually goes away as fast as it started.  I was told it is ibs.  I have made a Dr. appt with a new Dr. for early jan since I have never really had any testing of late, and I am a 50 year old women.   I just had a bout and this time in the mucus  was a very very small spot of red blood.  I am a very nerves person and was wondering if this can be something other than cancer.  Now that I have this fear in my mind my stomach is a mess all the time.  Can nerves play apart in this? Thank You

I agree that IBS may be a possibility.

However, given your age, and the presence of blood and mucous, you need a colonoscopy.  This is the most definitive test to exclude colon cancer.

If negative, sending the stool for analysis and culture can be done to exclude malabsorption and infection.

I would also consider a blood test to exclude celiac disease.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.
