bowels

I started using probiotics (acidopholus and other friendly bacteria) several months ago to better help regulate my bowels.  However, since then my stools have changed.Symptoms include:  tarry-looking stools, often thin, smooth, foul-smelling, sometimes they appear like coffee grinds, esp. when I wipe; difficulty passing stools although they are soft or formless.

I abused laxative for many years.  Have occasion to take them as I usually feel constipated if I don't over a period of time.  About 7 years ago, I used Orlistat regularly.  Have not used it in 3 years.

Could these symptoms be signs of colon cancer?

Changes in bowel habits need to be excluded for colon cancer.  The best test to evaluate this would be a colonoscopy, and I would recommend this if the symptoms continue.

Sending the stool off for malabsorption analysis, as well as blood tests to exclude celiac disease can also be considered.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.
