colorectal surgery

  I am 28 years old and have crohn's.  Two years ago I had a large abdominal abcess (abscess) and required lengthy surgery in which they had to remove most of my large intestine.  I have an ileostomy. My surgeon told me I could be reconnected at a later date if I choose.  I have been symptom free from the pain of crohn's for two years now.  I would like to have it reversed but unsure if it's wise.

I'm glad to hear that you are doing so well post-operatively. An operation is available to create a rectal pouch from ileum and connect it to the anal canal. Patients with Crohn's disease often have recurrent disease at areas of surgical connection and therefore are usually considered poor candidates for this particular operation. The anastomosis (surgical connection) often becomes inflamed and can actually break down. Nevertheless, if you wish to see if there are any other surgical options for you, I would recommend you have an evaluation by an expert Colorectal Surgeon.
