consistently high sgot level

I am a 29 year old female.  I feel fine.  However, for years, I have had an elevated SGOT level on each and every blood test.  The highest level has been 725.  This number varies, but is always above 175.  No other liver function levels are elevated.  Two years ago, I saw a gastroenterologist who could provide no explanation for this problem as I was experiencing no other symptoms.  I have recently given birth, and the doctors discovered that my new son also has an unusually high sgot level (in the 500's).  Like me, he has no other symptoms and otherwise appears to be in good health.  We both tested negative for any type of hepatitis.  What could this seemingly genetic problem be?

Dear Kristin,
Elevated liver tests can be due to causes other than viral hepatitis.  Autoimmune liver disease, Wilson's disease, medication-related liver disease must all be considered.  Often the only wy to make a definitive diagnosis is by liver biopsy.
