diarrhea/mucous/blood

Hello,

I am 35 years old, male, OK health.
I ate in a resteraunt last night, and felt OK at first, but early this morning I woke up with a stomach ache.  Unfortunately, what woke me up was an emergency at work and I had to go to a job site.  I felt kind of bad, but was OK.  I fixed what had to be fixed and left for the day, a few hours later. On the way home I really had to go to the bathroom pretty bad.  I "held it in" for about an hour until I got home.  I had a mix of solid and watery stools.  The rest of the day I had very small amounts of liquid stool and felt nauseas most of the day.  The last time I went to the bathroom, I only had a minor sensation of having to go.  I passed no stool, but a small amount of clear mucous, with a small amount of blood in it.  I have not gone since and frankly I am feeling a bit better.  I do not have a fever.  I spoke with my GP as this concerned me and he felt that the blood/mucous was likely from the strain of holding back the BM and also from the irritaion of frequent movements. He felt overall I might have some minor food poisoning.  I have never had this symptom before, and I do not think it is an external hemorhoid or anything like that.  He suggested I follow up with him tomorrow if this continues, but he did not seem overly concerned.

Does this sound like the correct advice?

Infection should be ruled out, as this can lead to blood and mucous in the stool.  The stool should be sent off for analysis and culture.

If it continues, I suggest further testing to rule out inflammatory bowel disease.  This can be done by imaging studies like a CT scan or a colonoscopy.

I would discuss these options with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
