elevated enzymes

I went in for a routine physical and my doctor found my liver enzymes highly elevated.  My ALT was 358, my AST was 295 and my GGT was 94.  He had me go off my antibiotic and all alcohol for a week to see if it brought down my nymbers and then did another test and also checked for Hepatitis.  That screen came back clean so we are going to do a abdominal and Pelvic CAT scan to see what might be causing it.  Unfortunately my enzymes went UP, inatead of DOWN.  Now my ALT is 468 and my AST is 635! My thyroid is slow and my blood sugar was low.  The only reason I went in was because I was SO tired all the time.

Anyone have anything like this happen to them>

It would be best to maybe go to the Hepatitis forum to see what the Physician Assisitant in that room has to say. This forum is not monitored by a physician so your answers here may be vague. Hope all works out for you...take care.

Sounds like your doctor is doing all the right things so far.  Elevated enzymes means that your liver is inflamed.  The trick is to figure out what is making it inflamed.  The doctor told you to stop the alcohol and the medicine because those are two things that irritate the liver.  From what you said he screened you for viral hepatitis and you don't have that.  You should say a prayer of thanks for that result.  The doctor has ordered the scan so he can check for other things in the liver like fatty infiltration.  Fatty infiltration of the liver is not a normal thing and it can irritate the liver and cause some inflamation (inflammation).  If you are overweight you should try to lose some weight.  It is the only approved treatment for fatty liver at the present time.

Just so you know....I had elevated liver enzymes when I was on oral antibiotics for acne (erythromycin and tetracyclen).

The internist I was referred to flat out said I had hepatitis before even testing me.  I asked if it could be acne meds I was taking.  He scoffed at the idea.  Nevertheless, I stopped taking them and did the Hepatitis tests and they were negetive (it was (much to the surprise of the internist).  After 6 weeks I did the liver function tests and they were normal.

You may be like me, one of a small percentage of people who are sensitive to certain "well-tolerated" drugs.
