elevated ggt levels

elevated ggt levels

i am a 58 year old male at a weight of 170lbs. and i am 6 feet tall. i just got a physical and my ggt level came back elevated at 88. i was wondering what that can be from and if certain over the counter medications can cause the level to rise. i currently take fiber capsules and excedrin migraine for headaches. i am not a drinker or smoker. i just am curious what else could cause this. and if at all possible what kind of symptoms should i be looking for. thanks.

Alcohol as well as any medication that can affect the liver (i.e. large doses of Tylenol) can raise the GGT.  I believe that Excedrin migrain does contain acetominophen - large doses of this can affect the liver function tests.

I would obtain a liver ultrasound as well as blood tests looking for hepatitis.  If negative, repeating the liver function tests while abstaining from alcohol as well as acetominophen can be considered.

If it continues to rise, note that there are several other non-liver diseases that can cause an isolated elevated in GGT - pancreatic disease, myocardial infarction, renal failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
