fatty liver

fatty liver

I have been having a constant discomfort on my right side of my
belly for the past three years. Sometimes, this discomfort and
feeling of heaviness were suddenly changed to a sharp pain. After
going through different doctors and examinations, I was finally
diagnosted with a fatty liver couple of weeks ago. My liver showed
to be enlarger and with some fat strips throughout it.
My doctor was very surprised with my result because all of my blood
exams showed very normal levels of cholesterol, fat, sugar, or any
other liver-related substances. Moreover, and besides being young
(34 years old), I exercise regularly on both treadmill and swim laps.
I am not overweight and my wife and I have a very low-fat-oriented
diet (fruits, vegetables, salads, beef, fish, chicken, pasta). However,
I drink beer & wine occasionally. As nobody is perfect, I have my own sin:
while my wife eats one or two pieces of chocolate, I eat 7 or 8 at the
same time. I like chocolate a lot! Could that be the cause of my fatty
liver? As a result of my recent exam(CT Scan), I stopped drinking wine
and beer and stopped eating chocolates, for a while, though. Am I
correct in stopping with those? Are there any special diet(vegetables,
fruits) that help to reduce the fat content in the liver? What kind of
fruits and vegetables are the greatest liver friends? My doctor
does not have an answer for me so he will refer me to a liver specilialist
soon. For this past three days, I have had very high fever(104-105). My
doctor attributed that to a very strong virus. Could it be related
to my fatty liver? I still feel that heaviness feelling on my liver area
as well as sharp pains occasionally....

Dear Carlos,
In an attempt to avoid giving up BOTH alcohol and chocolate, I would suggest a sklightly different approach.  I woukld give up the alcohol first and observe if the liver tests improved over the course of 2-3 months.  If liver tests returned to normal, then the cause of the fatty liver was the alcohpol meaning that you can continue to enjot chocolates.  IF, however,  liver test
elevations persisted, I would reduce but not eliminate the choloclate in an attempt to maintain one of life's pleasures.
I am unaware of any vegetables that will treat fatty liver which parenthetically is usually not a serious problem if not due to alcohol.
I doubt that your current viral infection is a reflection of your fatty liver.
