fluid liver cysts

  I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT MY FATHER.TWO YEARS AGO HE WAS TOLD HE HAS CYSTS ON HIS LIVER THAT ARE FILLED WITH FLUID,THEY ARE NOT CANCEROUS.HIS RIGHT SIDE SWEELS REALLY BIG AND HE IS IN PAIN ALL THE TIME.HIS DOCTOR TOLD HIM THAT THE PAIN IS SOMETHING THAT HE WILL HAVE TO LIVE WITH FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE.IT IS REALLY BAD BECAUSE THIS STOPS HIM FROM DOING ANYTHING BECAUSE HE IS ALWAYS IN PAIN.THEY SAY IF THEY GO IN AND DRAIN THE FLUID FROM THESE CYSTS THAT THE NEXT DAY IT WILL BE RIGHT BACK.I WOULD BE SO GREATFUL IF YOU COULD TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT THIS.IT IS SO HARD TO SEE SOMEONE YOU LOVE BE IN CONSTANT PAIN ALL THE TIME.

Dear Ava,
LIver cysts are usually benign and are often incidental findings on ultrasound or CT scan of the liver. On the other hand, if the cysts in his  liver  are enlarging and indeed the cause of  your father's pain, he may require surgical intervention. He should have repeat imaging of his liver to look for hemorrhage (bleeding)  into a cyst and to measure the size of the cysts in comparison to previous studies.
