gilberts syndrome

gilberts syndrome

I was diagnosed as having Gilberts Syndrome about 4 years ago.
My blood tests all indicate exceptionally high levels of billirubin.
I don't think I have had a liver function tests where my billirubin levels have been in normal limits.
All other liver functions are within normal limits. It was first diagnosed when I had bad stomach cramps
for over 2 to 3 months.  I also had exceptionally loose stools.  After a stomach clear out I returned to
normal after being on 5 to 6 courses of anti-biotics.  After much perserverence everything returned to
normal, however, I do get days where I feel lightheaded and nauseous in the morning.  Is there anything that
can be done about this?  I still have alchohol within reasonable limits.  Would it be better to give it up?
Dear Robert,
Gilbert's syndrome is not usually associated with any symptoms. However, it may reveal itself during periods of stress, fasting and after administration of certain drugs (alcohol, narcotics). I would certainly try and cut out alcohol for now and see if that makes a difference in your symptoms. You may need further evaluation to rule out other causes of nausea (such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease, nonulcer dyspepsia, gastritis, gallstones, hepatitis, pancreatitis etc.) should your symptoms persist.
