laparascopic fundoplication

  My mother, who is 55 years old, is undergoing this procedure next week.  SHe has been diagnosed with reflux and has had the problem for many many years.  I am concerned about the side effects of this surgery, and exactly how dangerous is it.  is it major surgery?  What exactly does the procedure hope to accomplish and what can we expect during the recovery stages.  I understand from her doctors that her acid levels are very high.  Will this cure the already high levels?  Her main ailment with this reflux was a NASTY cough which lasted for long periods of time.  Will she be cured of that.  And what is the next thing to do if this procedure is unsuccesfull.  Any information would be GREATLY appreciated.

The goal of Nissen fundoplication is to reduce the frequency with which gastric contents reflux into the esophgus, mouth and upper airways ( the cause for your mother's cough).  Fundoplication will not reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach.  Pre-surgery, there should be an esophageal motility study to confirm that there are no esophageal motility problems that would cause post-operative problems (specifically, an inability to swallow solid food).  If your mother complans of much bloating, a gastric emptying study should also be done preoperatively.
If the fundoplication is done via the laparoscopic technique, hospitral stays are very short.
