motrin and liver disease

motrin and liver disease

My father was diagnosed with the beginning stages of cirrohis in Feb. of 2001. At that time he was anemic so they checked him for internal bleeding and found that he had esophogeal varices that were bleeding. They also checked and took a biopsy of his stomach which showed the bacteria that means he had an ulcer also. They let him go home where he got worse and was in severe pain. I brought him back to the emergency room where they admitted him again. He was very confused so they checked his ammonia level which was very high. It was 75. His platelet count was 120,000. Every day his platelet count dropped by about 25,000. They put him on high doses of lactulose to drop his ammonia level. It did get back to about 37 so immediately after they sent him home. The last time they drew his blood and checked his platelet count was 2 days before they discharged him and it was 79,000. When they sent him home and in the hospital they let him take 800 motrin for the pain in his back. One week later I had him back in the e.r. He was in severe pain. Pain all over his body.  His platelet count was 5. They kept him in the e.r. for 4 more hours before they flew him out to St. Francis. My dad didn't make it. Should you be taking motrin if you have liver disease and bleeding ulcers? The doctors in Peoria said he died because he bled into his belly causing his kidneys and liver to fail. Also is this a painful process to go through?

I just wanted to say that I am VERY sorry to hear about your Dad!  I was looking at this website because MY Dad was just diagnosed with cirrohis, also.  He's anemic, also.  This is scary, isn't it?  I'm so sorry your Dad died.  The doctors have said that my Dad may have anywhere from 2 months to 2 years to live, but that after the 2 months he'd most likely be in a nursing home.  Not fun.  Again, I'm so sorry about your Dad.  I will remember you in my prayers.
