mucus in my stool

mucus in my stool

I have been experiencing some discomfort in my stomach and lower intestines. I have been having some mucus in my stools and when I wipe. Its clear to yellow in color and does not smell pleasant. I went to my doctor and he gave me some flagyl. It helped a little but as soon as I was off the symptoms of discomfort and mucus are back.
What is wrong and what can be done?
I'm 32, ,male.

There are a variety of reasons for mucous in the stool.  This can include infection, malabsorption, celiac disease, or chronic pancreatitis, among others.

Sending off the stool for a culture and analysis can be helpful.  I would also obtain blood tests to exclude chronic pancreatitis and celiac disease.

If the tests remain negative, a colonoscopy can be performed for a more thorough evaluation of the lower GI tract, as well as to exclude inflammatory bowel disease.
