need fast advice

my 63 year old mom has cirrhosis ( does not drink ) and was on a transplant list at emory in atlanta but she found out she had breast cancer and was terminated from the list, she had a mascectomy and has been cleared of any cancer but emory refuses to add her back to the list for at least 2 years and this answer came after many visits and calls from other doctors . now my mon is in our local hospital with normal flu like sickness but cant seem to shake it off . the doctors said her liver is over working her spleen is overworking her heart is overworking and her body is overworking , all due to her liver problem. the doctors want her to go to birmingham ala but we  ( her family ) dont know what to do . if anyone has any suggestions please respond or email me ***@****   or ***@****    thank you all and god bless !

i would sugest you  bring emory up on neglegent charges through the advice of an attorney of corse.but at this moment your mother is the most important matter at hand i would sugest if you trust the doctor that is asking you to move her it may be the only hope she has at the this point what are they going  to do for her at this other hospital are they going to arange a transplant or will it be a  treatment program until they can do the transplant ?either way it still may be her only option and if so you must do what is best for her no matter if someones has to go there to stay with her or not you only have one mother .i think the position emory has put your family in is very ungodly and they should be held acountable for their actions .but for now do what is best for your mom as i said even if you have to go with her to asure she gets the best of care because hospitals have away of taking care of patients better when the family is involved .my heart goes out to you i have been through cancer and many other life threating illnesses with both parents and i would have done any thing to keep them alive and well but they lost their battle with cancers and other medical problems .so i guess what i am saying is do all you can do to be there and to help her fight because she doesn't have the strenth at this time to do it on her own, and with the family behind her she may pull through this .if not at least she will know how much her children love her .so be strong and god will help you and your mother through this .i will pray for you and your mom.god bless

p.s if i am not mistaken one of the family members(children, sister ,brother etc.) could donate part of their liver if they are a match .the liver is a remarkable organ in the fact it can regenerate itself.as i said i am not sure but it is something you could ask her doctors about. i believe it is called living donors .god bless

I wish your mother the very best. My husband has cirrhosis and is waiting on a liver transplant. He has a beeper, and we are just waiting for it to go off. (When a donor is found).
I can tell you that here in Texas, they told us that when we do get that "beep" (meaning to 'come now' for a transplant)...they warned us that the first question they'll ask is "do you have any colds or viruses right now?"
We were told that they would postpone a transplant for any type of infection. They won't do a transplant until an infection is under control. (No fevers allowed).
I would hope that they are giving your mother antibiotics right now to get rid of her flu-like symptoms.
You asked for advice---so I'll tell you what I would do if I were in your shoes:
1. Ask them WHY they want to send her to Birmingham. (Is the treatment there better? Are they better equipped to handle her problems?) Make them specify WHY Birmingham would be better.
2. If your mother has a fever---make sure they are giving her plenty of antibiotics. People with cirrhosis can get spontaneous infections in their abdomens if they have ascites. (Does your mother have ascites?)
3. Ask if the criteria for a transplant is different in Birmingham. (Different hospitals have different criteria (rules) about who can have a transplant.) Maybe she could be re-listed in Birmingham. (Ask).

I have a cirrhosis webpage---you are welcome to visit. (There's info and a message board.)

I'd love to be of help if I can.
