nissen fudoplication surgery

I am 39 years old and have been suffering with GERDS for about 17 years so far. I was told that I have a paraesphogeal hernia on my hiatal hernia, I also have a chronic cough which I can't stand but anyway I was told by my gastro dr that I can not live with this that the paraesphogeal hernia will rip the diapraghm and when I met the surgeon for the first time he stated that I could live with it also that my motility was too low to have the surgery and would send me for another test to check to see if the motility was wrong. The second motility came back better and then he said that it was OK to have the surgery. I've been on all the medications out there and the one that is working right now for me is prevacid. I have low iron anemia and my ferritin levels are below normal could this be due to the prevacid? Also in regards to the surgery I'm torn about having it I've read some real horror stories and then I've read some good stories about the surgery is a paraesphogeal hernia something that you can live with? What about living on prevacid what could that do to the stomach acids?

You really need to have the paraesophageal hernia repaired. There is a one in three chance that the Hernia can become strangulated and cut off blood supply which would result in gangreous infection which could kill you. I know this because I had a paraesophageal hernia and was told this by my surgeon. I had mine repaired. You can check on the internet about Paraesophageal hernias.
