overuse of loperamide (imodium(immodium))

I was wondering if you use imodium (immodium) to control one's bowel
movements due to food intollerances...could it have any adverse
effects if you were to use it on a regular basis. Say one 2mg
tablet per day to keep you regulated?
Dear Bruno,
Loperamide (Imodium (immodium)) is indicated for the control and symptomatic relief of acute nonspecific diarrhea and of chronic diarrhea associated with inflammatory bowel disease. It is also indicated for reducing the volume of discharge from ileostomies.
Since the action of loperamide is similar to the effect of narcotic agents on the intestinal tract (i.e. to slow intestinal tract) there is always the concern that long-term use may be associated with drug dependence and tolerance. Studies have shown that loperamide has a low abuse potential, little potential for dependence in humans and no development of tolerance to its anti-diarrheal effects. Nevertheless, it would probably be better to limit the use of loperamide to lowest possible effective dose. Adverse reactions associated with loperamide include: hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions, abdominal pain or distention, nausea & vomiting, constipation, fatigue, drowsiness, dizziness or dry mouth. I hope you find this information helpful.
