pVT and Myleofibrosis

pVT and Myleofibrosis

My sister is 53 and has PVT of the liver. She also has Myleofi brosis a rare bone marrow disease. Her doctors want her to
be turned over to Hospice but my sister and myself want her to
get a second reveiw of her medical records. What are your thoughts?Do you think she could have a chance to survive? I have
read info. on stem cell transplants? we live in NC

Tough to comment on prognosis without reviewing the records.  The treatment of portal vein thrombosis depends on the severity of the disease.  

Surgery would be the best option if the lesion continues despite conservative therapy.  However, this may not be feasible depending on the condition of the bone marrow disease.

The other consideration would be anticoagulation to prevent future episodes of thrombosis.  The risks of bleeding certainly may preclude its use.  Usefulness of this approach should be discussed on a case-by-case basis.  Again, the presence of the bone marrow disorder may not make anticoagulants feasible.  

You may want to inquire about another hepatology (i.e. a liver specialist) opinion.
