previous post on gas

You mentioned at http://www.medhelp.org/perl6/gastro/archive/180.html that some people are air swallowers, possibly because they are mouth breathers. Can you clarify this? How could mouth breathing increase air swallowing if the gut and lungs are separate systems?
______
Dear MV,
The observation is a clinical one.  The pathophysiology of why mouth breathers swallow air has not been established.  One could postulate that if one swallows food or saliva while there is a lot of gas in the mouth, air would also be swallowed.  Again, this is hypothetical.
