propulcid for DGE...how long?

  My daughter is now taking propulcid for delayed gastric emptying
  and is doing very well...feels good, gaining weight,etc.  How long
  should she take the propulcid?  Her prescription runs out in 10
  days.  She stopped taking it for 3 days (mom forgot to pick up new
  prescription before Pharm. closed for weekend) and her symptoms
  returned.
     will she take this for months, years, forever?  Should she try
  to do without it every so often to see if she needs it?  I get the
  feeling that her gastroenterologist's knowledge about this problem
  is limited,  so any info you can give me would be great!
                               thank you :-}

Dear Felicia,
The duration of propulsid therapy will depend in part on the underlying cause of the delayed gastric emptying.  If your daughter has idiopathic gastroparesis, she may require indefinite therapy,  If she stops treatment it does not necessarily mean that she will be constantly symptomatic.  The severity of symptoms may wax and wane off treatment.
This information is presented for educational purposes.  Always consult your personal physician for specific medical questions.
