recovery from colon removal

My close friend has UC/crohns and as a result had his colon removed about a year ago. He no longer has a bag on the outside (re-routed internally). He is still suffering from headaches, backaches, joint pain, and persistent cough. In addition he is tired all the time and has little to no libido. He is losing hope that life will ever return to any kind of normal. I'm afraid depression is setting in as well. Can you please suggest any medical or perhaps holistic things that we might pursue to help him regain some physical strength and well being? Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated!

There are a variety of rheumatological conditions that may be associated with UC/Crohn's disease.  The headaches, backaches and joint pain may be caused by this.  Obtaining blood tests looking at the ANA and rheumatoid factor level can be considered, and imaging the symptomatic joints can also be considered.

Regarding the cough, chest imaging and a referral to an ENT causes can look for some of the more common causes like bronchitis or chronic sinusitis.

As for treatment, it would depend on what is causing the symptoms.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician, or with the appropriate specialist.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
