take it out or not

I am a 40 yr old male with a long history of GERD. In the last
year I have had 3 endoscopes. The first one came back showing high
dyspasia, the next one 3 months later show lower dyspasia, then the last
one just last week came back show high again. Because of my Barrett's
being so high up the Dr. said that laser teatment is out and that
surgery is the only thing to do.
I've heard that the removal of or esophagus is a every major job
and that it is hard to live life as you know it after it
I would like to get in touch with anyone that has gone though this
______________
Dear Karl,
There are some surgeons who do an operation in which only the esophageal mucosa is removed.  This approach is better tolerated than esophageal removal, but has an increased risk of subsequent tumor.
Esophageal resection is a major operation.  Hopefullt, readers who have had the surgery will provide you with additional information.
