thin, flat stools and an enlarged tongue

Hello,

I noticed that I have had a change in bowel movements.  My stools are thin and flat.  I do not see any visible blood during my bowel movements.  My tongue has also increased in size, it appears that it is retaining water.  It appears to have some teeth imprints on the side of the tongue.  I understand that the tongue is a reflection of the health of the digestive system and I am very concerned.  I have an appointment to see the doctor in 2 weeks, but I want some clues to what I might have.  I am worried that I may have colon cancer.  Any ideas to why I would be having flat stools and an enlarged tongue?

I am in my mid 20's.

Thanks.

Regarding the change in stool caliber, it can be due to irritable bowel syndrome.  However, before attributing it to that, you may want to consider a quick lower endoscopy to ensure there isn't any anatomical abnormality causing it.

Macroglossia (enlargement of the tounge) can be seen in disorders like amyloidosis and acromegaly.  You may want to discuss with your physician these possibilities and possible workup.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
