unusual stool

  I am suffering from many of the same symptoms described by irritable bowl syndrome(ibs), however some additional and concerning symptoms are excessive amounts of white mucus like material and some blood in the stool.  What may be the problem and should I see my GP, this has been ocurring for approx. 5 days or more

Irritable bowel syndrome  (IBS) is broadly defined as a symptom complex of chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel habits (diarrhea or constipation). Nevertheless, many patients have additional symptoms. Approximately half of all patients with irritable bowel syndrome complain of mucous discharge with stools.
However, there are some symptoms that are typically not associated with a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome. Rectal bleeding, blood in the stool, weight loss, diarrhea which awakens patients from sleep are just some of the symptoms that are not compatible with a diagnosis of IBS. Although small amounts of bright red blood in the toilet bowl or on the tissue paper suggest hemorrhoidal bleeding or the presence of a fissure further evaluation is warranted. A flexible sigmoidoscopy or a colonoscopy ( tests where a tube with a light and video camera at its tip are inserted into the rectum and advanced up the large intestine ) can help identify the source of bleeding and exclude the presence of other lesions. Your physician can help recommend the right test for you.
