I was wondering if it is true that the hepatitus (hepatitis) B vaccine has blood in it? I was told that it has enough blood to be checked for the aids virus before it is used. Is this true and if so where can I find info to verify
Dear Maria,
Approximately 300,000 new infections with hepatitis B virus occur in the United States each year and in 6-10 percent of these cases, chronic carrier states result.
The hepatitis B vaccine has been available since 1982. Initially it was a plasma derived preparation and therefore contained blood products. Today the hepatitis B vaccine is made by genetically engineered yeast and does not contain blood products. Two types of recombinant vaccines are available which are interchangeable. They are called Recombivax HB and Engerix HB. In healthy individuals the response rate is 95-99 percent. Routine immunization of all infants and children by the age of  11 years has now been instituted. I hope you find this information helpful.
