11 year old son with severe pain & constipation

My 11 year old son has had severe constipation & stomach pain for 2 months. He was a happy healthy kid before this, now he's not able to go to school, he's been hospitalized several times, recently had to do a cleanout with an NG tube. He's had blood work, stool samples, endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, ultrasound. The drs have mentioned gastroparesis but he's not vomiting or nauseous. He's scheduled for a gastric emptying test this week. Miralax is no longer working, Milk of Mag was working but its been several days now that its not. Any ideas of what this could be or what to do would be greatly appreciated! Megan

Hello,
A detailed medical history, physical examination and work up are important for arriving at a diagnosis. Few causes of constipation in children are some neurological conditions, hypothyroidism, cystic fibrosis, Hirschsprung's disease, cow’s milk allergy etc.A metabolic or gastrointestinal problem can also present with severe constipation.Gastroparesis causes nausea, bloating, abdominal pain.Gastrc emptying test will allow the radiologist to detect  how quickly or slowly food leaves the stomach. Discuss above mentioned possibilities with his doctor. Do keep me posted on how he is doing.
Take care and regards!

Thank you for responding!  My son had a gastric emptying study done last week, and did not indicate gastroparesis. My son's GI dr referred us to Diagnostic Services, so we're going to see the diagnostic dr next week.  Hopefully we'll be able to figure out what's causing his pain and constipation soon.  I appreciate your response!
