11 yr. old son with GERD and cough

by Cathy__0__0, Jul 19, 1998 12:00AM

My 11yr.old son suddenly developed GERD he is seen by GI dr.
at Boston Childrens Hosp. He is currently taking Reglen and
zantac. He has been on these meds. since the first week in July
of this year. The end of June he developed a cough which occurs
during sleep, when waking, and during the day. It is a short
cough, dry, with no other symptoms. I asked his pediatrician
about this as I feel it is reflux related, however the ped.
thinks it is allergies, but my son has been tested and has no
allergies. He has activity induced asthma very mild which I know
is GRED related. My question is, shouldn't surgery be strongly
considered since Gerd can't be cured, only sometimes put in
remission for a while? I know the long term results of Lap.
Fundo surgery is better if done in childhood.Should I push
for PH probe and endoscope test then surgery or can GERD be
cured for good with meds. My son doesn't want to take meds. for
ever. Thank you for your advice.

Dear Cathy,
I realize that it s difficult to take medication daily.  Nevertheless,I would suggest a conservative approach for now, even though your son may still have sone symptoms.  Esophageal reflux surgery for children is indicated for children who have failed medical treatment but you must remember that sometimes repeat surgery is needed as the child grows.  Additional testing with pH probe etc will confirm the degree of reflux and would be needed if surgery is being considered.
