Dear Jill,
Most bacterial and viral causes of gastroenteritis are self limited usually lasting only lasting less than 3 weeks.  Persistent symptoms for longer than 3 weeks should raise the possibility that you may have acquired  an unusual infection e.g. giardia, parasite.  The appropriate stool tests should be done  Sometimes, the acute infection can alter the enteric flora so that there is a persistence of altered function (loose stools etc).  Finally, there may be a concurrent condition that has either been unmasked by the infection or coincidentally developed e.g. celiac disease gastroparesis, inflammatory bowel disease.
Persistent symptoms will require further visits to your physician for further testing.
This information is provided for educational purpose sonly.  ASk specific questions to your personal physician.
If you wish a second opinion, we would be happy to see you in the Division of Gastroenterology of henry ford Health system.  You can arrange an appoinment by calling our Physician Referral Line at (800)653-6568 and requesting an appoinment with Dr. Fogel, one of our experts in the treament of diarrheal illness
