18 months of PERSISTENT NAUSEA

by Marge-L, Jun 29, 1998 12:00AM

I am a 69 year old woman who has been nauseated every day for 18 months. The nausea is worse in
the morning and usually tapers off during the day. I have not vomitted, nor had any other digestive
problems. The nausea started hours before I had an emergency appendectomy 18 months ago. Three
weeks later tests showed my gall bladder was functioning poorly, and it was removed. Both surgeries
were done using laporoscopy. Since then I have had the following tests done, but none of the tests
have helped to pinpoint the problem:
  : MRI-head
: CAT scans-head abdomen, pelvis, pancreas
  : Ultra sound-abdomen and pelvis
: X-rays-upper GI and small bowel
  : Panendoscopy
  : Gastro emptying study
  : Occult blood test
  : Echo exam-pelvis and transvaginal
  : Colonoscopy
  : Urinalysis
  : Hepatobiliary imaging
  : Helico Bacter Pyloris
  : Blood draws
  : Stool cultures
  : Lactose intolerance tests
  : Thyroid function test
: I am currently taking Elavil (50 mg) and Premarin .625 mg)
  : PLEASE HELP ME !!!

Dear Marge L,
Your physicians have been very complete in their evaluationof your nausea.  If all the tests that you list were normal, it is safe to conclude that you do NOT have a structural or functional problem of the GI tract as the cause of your nausea.  The physicians have also excluded a central nervous system cause.  Have you had any change in weight since the onset of the nausea?  Are there other symptoms that you associate with the nausea e.g. dizziness, change in hearing, noise in ears.  If you have these latter problems, you may have amiddle ear problem that is contributing to the nausea.
You should discuss with your physician the benefits of symptomatic treatment with Tigan or possibly Reglan.  Also ask him if the nausea could be related to vestibular cause.
