5 yr old undiagnosed stomach condition

by Wendy__0__0, Aug 02, 1998 12:00AM

My 5 yr old son began complaining about a stomach ache about 2 months ago.  It would come and go.  2 weeks ago his cramps increased in severity and he would vomit once a day, get to feeling fine then have another cramping episode and vomit again.  He did not have fever or diarrhea.  I took him to the doctor and they suspected a parasite, giardia.  He had 3 abdominal x-rays and an abdominal sonigram which were normal. No signs of constipation. After 2 negative stool samples, he ordered a blood test.  His SED rate was normal as was his WBC count.  The only thing notable was his esenophil level was slightly elevated, which the Dr. said could indicate allergies or a parastitc condition, at which time he ordered another stool sample, also negative.  All the while my son was having good days and bad days.  Cramping usually beginning in the afternoon, he would sometimes vomit.  Cramps would keep him up at night.  Phenergan didn't help much.  After no answers, I began to read about parasitic conditions and began 4 days ago treating him with an herbal parasite cleanse, Black Walnut.
Today after a normal BM we noted he had pinworms present. We called the Dr. and took his BM to the lab and are awaiting results.  Can a parasit in his body (pinworm or otherwise) cause his severe cramps??  The Doctor says the next step will be an upper GI.  This has 4 doctors at our clinic puzzled and us very worried. What else could this be or what other tests might be indicated??

Dear Wendy,
Pinworms usually do not cause severe intestinal cramps, although some other infections may produce this symptom.  The GI Forum no longer has the services of a pediatric gastroenterologist.  You should consider reposting your e-mail to the Maternal-Child Health Forum where it will be answered by a care giver eperienced in dealing with diseases of children.
