7 yr. old with esophageal/stomach spasms

by My4sons, Jan 16, 2003 12:00AM
Hi everyone,
I wrote before about my 7 yr. old son who has a recent history of vomiting, mostly at night, but sometimes in the morning too.  This past week out of 7 days he's only had 2 nights that he didn't get sick. And I mean SICK, he throws up out of his sleep, violently, projectile vomiting.
Anyway, he had an upper GI series last Friday that showed he has "Persistant pyloric Duodenal spasm including the duodenal sweep"  " And minimally functional abnormality in the esophagus with secondary peristalsis noted during transit of barium thru the esophagus"

My question is: Do any of you have problems with the duodenum or esophagus to this extent, that you vomit almost on a daily basis?  I'm taking him to a specialist tomorrow, Friday and am nervous as to what he may want to do. What kind of tests do they do to check the insides of a body?  Is a scope the next step?    The last line of the Diagnosis from the Upper GI said that "Although the pancreatic abnormality is unlikely, further evaluation may be done with CT scan".  What would they be looking for in a CT of the pancreas?  He's only 7 yrs. old!  Thanks for any help, I'm getting nervous now and would appreciate any words of advice, what to ask, etc.  Thank you all, Becky

I'm glad you're taking your son to a specialist! Maybe someone else can advise you, about what questions to ask.

I do recommend that you check out a good website, about "EnteroLab", which is a non-profit lab, run by a wonderful MD, who wants to help people find out exactly which foods they are allergic to, sensitive to, intolerant of, etc.

Here's a link to Dr. Kenneth Fine's (MD) excellent website:

Good luck to you and your son.

Hey, My4sons, I also am glad you are taking your son too a specialist.  My son and I both have reflux and both pretty much daily.  When my son was very young, they did a sleep study along with a probe so they could see the effects the reflux had on him.  Also Concerned Lady had given me good advised a few months ago--and I also take her advise very seriously.  Her advise was given with respect and concern for myself and gave me the extra help I needed too confront my doctors of which - THANK GOD I am no longer being treated by.  My new doctors tell me that sometimes doctors do not like there egos "busted" and they giggled about it.  Needless too say--you're your childs advocate and you would NOT be out of line too ask for such a test or speak too the specialist too see if this could be of any help with him.  Would think that this happening in his sleep would be of much concern.  Also they have medications too help empty the stomach quicker--he might be able too help with that also--so your son would be more comfortable.  I always had my son's head of his bed raised and this also helps with me--could not hurt too try.  Hope any of this helps and please let us know how the appointment went today.
