8 weeks pregnant with Gastritis

: Famotidine (Pepcid) belongs to the class of medications called histamine receptor (H2) blockers. They inhibit acid secretion in
: the stomach. If famotidine worked for you during your last pregnancy you should be aware that recently published studies show
: that ranitidine (Zantac) is safe during pregnancy in a dose of 150 mg taken twice daily. Obviously it is best, if possible, to
: minimize the use of any medicine during pregnancy, but if your symptoms are particularly troublesome you could try ranitidine.

Thank you so much for your help. I went out today and bought some Zantac 75, but looking at the active ingredient it lists "84 mg ranitidine hydrochloride", and states it's equivalent to 75 mgs of ranitidine. Does  that make a difference? Is it still considered safe to take during pregnancy?
  Kristin
Dear Kristin,
Zantac 75 is the over the counter form of ranitidine (Zantac) and should be fine during pregnancy. It is approximately half the dose of prescription ranitidine (Zantac). The dose that was evaluated in the recent studies for pregnant patients with GERD and other acid-peptic disorders was 150 mg twice daily. Good luck.
