A question about Hernias

I am an athlete, and I have a hernia.  I got it about three years ago, and never did anything about it, because I was constantly preparing for tournaments (the hernia does not cause much discomfort, there is zero pain, and I just have a habbit of pushing it back in every once in a while.

My question is, after 3 years, I'm sure to have some scar tisues there, and it might make the surgery harder to do.  I would like to get the surgery, but am wondering if this will cause any complications, and HOW LONG IS RECOVERY.  Recovery time is very important for me, as the longer I have to wait, the less I can train.

Thank you for your understanding...
