Abdominal Distention - post GI virus/dehydration

by miserable0914, Jul 16, 2008 11:31AM
Here is a brief overview of my history.  I am still suffering from abdominal distention and discomfort.  Have not been eating/drinking much, small amounts when I do.  It certainly makes it worse when I do eat/drink.  I read somewhere that severe dehydration can temporarily "paralyze" your bowels and other organs.  Could that be what has happened and if so, how do you revive them and get things going again.  According to the scale, I am down 10 pounds from before I ever got sick, but have had to go up a pant size to fit around my abdomen, which looks as though I am 6 months pregnant!!!!

****************

violent "stomach flu" (GI virus of some sort) for 5 days prior to hospitalization
complete dehydration (blood pressure 100/40, elevated pulse, lethargic, dizzy)
hospitalized for IV fluids (8 bags received over 72 hours)
not much urination for over 24 hours - very amber and foul smelling
abdomen became distended
3 episodes of loss of consciousness w/ seizures either from dehydration or possible vasovagals
adequate urination finally kicked in, more yellowy
been home from hospital 11 days and belly still very distended and uncomfortable
have had 3 minor BMs - all prompted by either Reglan or Ducolax suppositories, none on own
Xrays show no obstruction
Blood tests revealed elevated platelets and increase liver function
Ultrasound shows three small gall stones, but doc said they are not the cause and didn't seem too concerned at this time
Apparently images do not show abundant matter in bowels nor air causing blockage either
