Abdominal pain and nausea

For the past 9 - 10 months, I have been suffering from stomach pain and nausea.  I have had 2 EGD's ultra scans, in the hospital for 2 days ( went to the ER - they thought I was having a heart attack) have been sent to a specialist at MUSC (who did nothing but talk to me).  The symptoms seemed to go away for a few weeks, but now they are back again with a new symptom. As of late, my bowel movements have changed.  They range in color from dark (almost black looking), brown and sticky to now grayish - brown.  I have taken medications that they give people who suffer from IBS and IBD - nothing is helping.  I hate the nause!  I haven't lost any weight - actually have gained about 15 pounds over the 9-10 months.  I have learned to live with the pain, but the nausea is awful.  I have an appointment with the doctor on Wednesday.  I am going to ask for a colonoscopy.  Does anyone have any suggestions??  I am up to my eyeballs in debt with docs and hospital and still no diagnosis.  I appreciate any suggestions or help anyone can give me.

The specialist at MUSC did mention Celiac's Disease - he was basically just naming things it could be - I came home and read about gluten - haven't really tried to go totally gluten free.  After the 2 EDG's the gastro doc just said my stomach lining was really inflamed.  They put me on Nexium and some other pill (started with an A)  I just took it short term.  I wasn't given an antibotic or anything to clear up the inflamation.  I never did understand that.  As far as eating too much fiber, no I have not changed my diet.  I have never had heartburn - or at least my understanding of heartburn.  The EDG proved no GERD - I am at a lost.  They say I don't have IBS or IBD - I do not have "restroom issues" that they suffer.  As of late, I have been going more - but not they are not consistant with IBD or IBS definitions.  Hopefully the colonscopy will explain that part.  I am beginning to wonder if something isn't wrong with my liver?  Thank you for your insight.  I appreciate your thoughts and comments.  These are things I can discuss with the doc. on Wednesday.

The problem with the symptoms you present is that they may be a number of things. The Colonoscopy may provide some answers. However, two possibilities come to mind:

The first is that yoou may be displaying signs of gluten intolerance. Of course, your EGD SHOULD have shown that, but maybe it wasn't to the level they could yet detect it? This may explain the symptoms you present.

The second is that you may want to consider possible gastroparesis. Two symptoms of GP are stomach pain after eating and nausea. (Because of the nature of GP, there may not be any other symptoms.) I don't know that this would explain the dark stools, though. (Have you been eating much fiber at all?) Of course, GP is often also accompanied by gallbladder issues UNLESS the problem is muscular as opposed to nervous, and if it is muscular, then you may be looking at something else entirely.

There is one other possibility: functional dyspepsia, which is defined as chronic upper, centered abdominal discomfort or pain excluding the predominant symptom, heartburn. Associated symptoms are early satiety, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension, bloating, and anorexia.

Of course, there could be a number of other issues related to "IBS" which cannot be addressed by medications, but I don't know a lot about that so, I couldn't tell you.

My gallbladder has been check out - they say it's fine.  I have stopped taking all meds - so I don't think the stool color has anything to do with those.  I haven't had any meds in over 2 months.  I have tried to watch what I eat and drink - trying to see if any certain food or drink causes any symptoms.  My stomach always hurts after I eat - no matter what I eat.  No, I haven't tried any herbal remedys.  Do you have any suggestions of what to try or take?
