Abnormal test results

by claire_m, May 02, 2006 12:00AM
Im a 24 year old woman, i do not drink
I had some blood test's taken at the gynae's office in March, and these results found i had elevated ALT, AST and GGT. However a hep screen came back negative.
The gynae was concerned enough reffered to see a specialist about these reults.
Currently i am suffereing from RUQ pain, vomitting and nausea, constantly tired, have bo appatite, bruise so easily and just feel generally unwell.
Is there a chance these results could just be a blip ? what could possibly be the cause ?

Elevated liver function tests can be suggestive of liver or gallbladder disease.  This should be suspected in light of your RUQ discomfort.

Hepatitis, fatty liver, or gallstones are just some of the possibilities.

I would start workup with an abdominal ultrasound as well as blood tests for hepatitis.  The ultrasound is a reasonable initial test to look for liver or gallbladder disease.

Repeating the liver function tests to ensure they are not rising is also suggested.

These options should be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

Those enzymes being high can indicate overuse of alcohol, but not always. You are smart to rule out hepatitis, that is also a common reason for numbers like this. Also too much tylenol or other meds can cause them to rise, so can some supplements and other health concoctions. Something is going on in your liver that is causing these blood values to rise, good plan to see a Heptologist. Fatty liver is one common condition that can cause those increases, and there are just too many liver disorders to list that can happen. You dont have to be fat to have fatty liver by the way. You really are in good hands with a Heptologist, they can decifer your blood markers and analyze your biopsy/scan findings and get you a diagnosis.
You might want to research fatty liver a little if it turns out you do have it, it can be controlled and even reversed by a liver friendly diet and exercise, weight loss if you are overweight. It is a relatively common reason for a rise in enzymes.
good luck with it.

Another thought, you might want to also see a Hemotologist at some point. Get to know your blood test results so you can understand them. Also, ASK the doctor what he suspects is going on, what he is looking for. Do you know what your AlphaFetaProtein (AFP) is? Any other blood tests come back out out of normal range? Did he check your iron?
Try not to worry too much until you know what is going on.

I do not know any other results im afraid - living in the UK, you dont get told much !
I havent seen as the specialist yet and it came as a shock to be referd to him, as my gynae assured me the results would prob be a one off, but as they were repeatidly high and with me still being sick, she thought the best option would be to send me to someone else.
I had an ultrasound in Feb, which showed NAD.
I know i shouldn't worry but the thought of biopsies and something being seriously wrong takes over !
Many thanks

It really does worry you, it woud worry anyone. It is scary to be told there might be something wrong. Worry won't help, you just have to tough it out and wait for answers. Sounds like your doctors are being thorough and that is a good thing. Best to do intensive testing and find out you worried for nothing than it woud be to have the doctors ignore it and tel you all is well when clearly it isnt.
The best of luck with it, try to put it out of your mind until you have test results.
