Dear Deb,
The external rectal sphincter is can contract after digital examination. In order to assess causes for incontinence, it is necessary to undergo formal anal rectal mannometry that includes measurement of internal and external sphincter pressures, the sphincter response to ballon dilation in the rectum and a continence test. These tests are often offered by a gastroenterologist or a colorectal surgeon.
Incontinence can result from childbirth or rectal trauma in addition to conditions that affect the spinal nerves.
