Accutane triggers Crohn's and UC in unsuspected many cases

by Laurel-Prokop, Nov 19, 1998 12:00AM

Alert! I have a growing list of patients in whom Accutane for acne triggered a lifelong serious illness called "inflammatory bowel disease" (Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Coilitis). It is often first misdiagnosed as "irritable bowel syndrome," and may develop while the patient is on Accutane of months or even years afterward. Its relationship is posted as a "WARNING" in the PDR, although most dermatologists and gastroenterologists are unknowledgeable about the possible connection. Please contact us if you are on or have been on Accutane and have any abnormal GI symptoms--cramping, gaseousness, diarrhea, blood in stool. We will tell you how yo file an adverse drug reaction report with the FDA and add your name to the list for an important epidemiological study we must convince the FDA to conduct.I will share our report with anyone interested, as I just have with the FDA, ACG, AGA, and CCFA. Accutane NOT recommended for IBD patients. Please be in touch.
Dear Laurel,
Thank you for this interesting new information. We will await further studies and research that confirm this finding.
