Acid Reflux Disease and esophagus spasms

Hi there! I'm a 28 year old male and have been having some problems with chest pain, heartburn, and what feels like esophagus spasms. I have had heartburn and the pain was in my back too for 2 days straight one time and it bothered me so bad that I went to the hospital. The doctor told me it was acid reflux disease, I had a GI cocktail and I felt better. I had also mentioned to them that I had what felt like spasms in the middle of my chest, I had told him it was a really strange feeling when it happens. He told me that it sounded like nutcracker esophagus. They never ran any tests at all, they just gave me a prescription for Pepcid 20mg. I still have problems with heartburn and chest pain more than once a week, sometimes it feels like it's in my back too,  I also cough when I eat and after I eat, and it feels like I have to clear my throat, I feel nauseated after I eat especially spicy foods like onions. Does this sound like acid reflux disease, and nut cracker esophagus? If so, what tests will my primary care doctor order and what medications will they prescribe? Thanks very much!

This does sound like acid reflux and the worst thing to eat is anything spicy or foods that you know cause you problems.  Let your doctor know that the Pepcid isn't working for you, there are other medications that can control this.
You really want to be under the care of a Gastroenterologist for this as it's their specialty and will know exactly what you need.  A gastro doc may do an endoscopy to view your throat and stomach for erosion.  But since you are so young I think he will just put you on medication until they find one that works, Prilosec which is sold over the counter is the only thing that helped my husband.  I hope this helps and you can get some relief, I know it's miserable!  Take care.

Welcome to the gastroenterology community!  It sounds like it could be acid reflux.  Has the pepcid helped you at all?  Have you tried any other medications?
