My 17 year old daughter was just diagnosed with fructose intolerance. This is very difficult for her. Fruit was her mainstay. She now cannot have any fruit at all. She never was a big sweets eater and in fact was an extremely healthy eater. We are having a hard time finding foods she can eat. She was also told to stay away from milk products so that limits her even more. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where we can shop to find the things she needs? One thing mentioned that she can have is English Muffins but we can't seem to find any without high fructose corn syrup in them which is a BIG no.

That's going to be a tough one because fructose is used in so many manufactured food products.  You may have to resort to making your own foods from scratch.

You might consider consulting a professional nutritionist for advice in this area as well, so ask your doctor for a referral.  In addition to your daughter's food intolerances, I'd be very concerned about malnutrition issues in the future.

Be sure to get exact diagnose(s).

Does your daughter has:
- fructose malabsorption
- hereditary fructose intolerance
- lactose intolerance

Separate tests for each condition are done by gastroenterologist. Only knowing exact diagnosis will make her possible to chose the right foods.

Let's say that she has fructose malabsorption + lactose intolerance. No fruits (or she may try lemons and grapefruits, and maybe bananas that are low in fructose), from vegetables she should probably avoid onions, artichokes, leeks, asparagus, sweet potatoes, carrots, red beets (that are all sweet)... and ...all dairy products.

She can buy dextrose (pure glucose) in the store and see if she can have that. But if she's already used to live without sugars, then no need to tease her with this.

There are probably several vegetables she can try: green salad, spinach and other green leaf vegetables...

HFCS is a proble, but there are many foods without it: rice, spagetti, polenta, bread (non-sweatened), non-processed and non-sweatened meat and fish.

She basically has to avoid canned food, jams and anything with HFCS, frucose, sorbitol and xylitol - the later two are commonly known as "polyols" and are in "sugar free" chewing gum or candies, or in "low calorie" foods.

I have both DFI and fructose malabsorption.  There is a baked goods company called Franz that makes a sourdough english muffin and a potato bread that have no fructose.  I hope this helps.
