Anal Fissure

Not sure this is the right place to post this, but here goes.
About 2 months ago I noticed blood in my stool. Not every time i had a bowel movement, but maybe every other time to every 2 times. I went to my general practitioner and after an inspection, he told me that I had a fissure. He told me about treatment options, but said that the easiest thing to do would be to get soap on my finger while im taking a shower and insert the finger into my anus and clean the cut (thereby letting it heal faster). I've been doing this for a month and it really hasn't been working.
This brings me to the problem i've been noticing the past few days. I've been noticing that there is almost a mucus-like substance when i wipe after i go to the bathroom. usually there is some blood in it.
I'm wondering if this is a normal symptom of a fissure or if it is something more serious that I should be worrying about? I really want to avoid the surgery typically done for fissures (because I don't want to deal with incontinence). Is there any other treatment that can be done? I have heard of the Botox treatment, but that can cause incontinence as well.
